How it works
What it counts
Characters are counted the way a reader sees them - an emoji or an accented letter is one character even when it's stored as several codes. Words are runs of letters and digits, and reading time assumes about 200 words a minute.
Why some characters shorten a text message
A standard text message holds 160 characters, but only from a basic alphabet. One character outside it - many accented letters or an emoji - switches the whole message to Unicode, which holds only 70. The counter shows how many messages your text will take, which matters in SMS campaigns where you pay for each one.
Frequently asked questions
Do spaces count as characters?
Yes - social networks and Google count spaces in their limits. The counter shows characters with and without spaces separately.
How long can a LinkedIn post be?
Up to 3,000 characters, but the feed shows only about the first 200 before “…see more”, so put the most important part first.
Does X count characters the same way?
Almost. X counts every link as 23 characters and some emoji as two, so right at the limit the result can differ by a few characters.
